June is one of the few months honoured with not just one, but three birthstones. Each one is rich in meaning, beauty, and history. Traditionally, the pearl is June’s birthstone. But over time, moonstone and alexandrite joined the ranks, making June a month of layered symbolism and diverse aesthetic expressions. As a goldsmith and designer deeply committed to craftsmanship, ethical sourcing, and storytelling through jewellery, I find this trio endlessly inspiring. Let me take you on a personal and professional journey through these enchanting gemstones.
Moonstone: A Luminous Symbol of Intuition and Feminine Energy

Moonstone, with its delicate shimmer and mysterious glow, is believed to channel the moon’s energy. It’s associated with intuition, protection, and emotional balance. When moonstone was added as a birthstone for June, it provided a more accessible alternative to pearl, once reserved for the affluent.
A Personal Tribute in Silver

One of my most meaningful creations is a moonstone pendant I made for my beloved grandmother’s 80th birthday. After she passed, I gave it to my mother, creating a deeply personal legacy. This piece is handmade in silver, suspended on a thick snake chain. The clasp, handmade as well, mirrors the shape of the moonstone at the front. It’s not just a clasp—it’s a visual balance that draws the eye from behind and invites curiosity about the design on the front.
Moonstone embodies the feminine spirit and the cycles of life. For me, this pendant represents maternal love, generational memory, and the quiet strength passed from one woman to another. The way moonstone catches the light feels like a whisper from the past—a glowing reminder of love and continuity.
Pearl: The Classic Beauty with Depth and Grace
Pearls have long symbolised purity, wisdom, and serenity. Historically, they were so rare and precious that only nobility could afford them. That exclusivity is precisely why moonstone was later added, ensuring the beauty of June’s birthstones could reach a wider audience.
Akoya Pearl Set in Fairmined Eco Gold
My Akoya pearl pendant and earring set brings the traditional elegance of pearl into a modern, sustainable context. Creating this set in Fairmined eco gold, ensuring the precious metal comes from responsible, empowering, and traceable sources. You can find more details about this piece in the shop section of my website.
Akoya pearls are saltwater pearls, known for their mirror-like lustre and perfect roundness. They are primarily cultivated in Japan and China. I source mine through Marc’Harit, a supplier whose commitment to sustainability aligns perfectly with my own values. They focus on ethical sourcing, supporting small-scale pearl farms that protect the environment and uphold fair labour standards.
This set is not just about aesthetic appeal. It’s about honouring the environment, valuing human dignity, and choosing luxury with a conscience. If you’re looking for a meaningful gift—or a timeless addition to your own collection—this Akoya pearl set is available to order now.
Alexandrite: The Magical Chameleon of Gemstones
Alexandrite is a gemstone of duality and transformation. Discovered in Russia in the 1830s, and naming this gemstone after Tsar Alexander II. Its extraordinary ability to change colour—green in daylight and red under incandescent light—captivated gem lovers and quickly earned it a place among the most coveted stones.
But natural alexandrite is rare and incredibly expensive. Hence, using high-quality synthetic versions is not unusual in fine jewellery today—offering the same dramatic colour shift and symbolic power at a more accessible price.
A Matching Set Across Time

In 2016, a client commissioned a diamond engagement ring in a cross-over design, featuring a pear-shaped synthetic alexandrite flush-set into each end of the band. The design was elegant, contemporary, and full of meaning. A year later, they returned for a matching bangle, this time in silver with a larger synthetic alexandrite and tiny flush-set diamonds. Despite the different metals, the two pieces were designed to harmonise perfectly, allowing them to be worn as a unified pair.
Alexandrite symbolises renewal, balance, and self-confidence. Its colour shift serves as a daily reminder that change is constant, but beauty can be found in all phases of life.

The Art of Giving: Jewellery as Storytelling and Legacy
Each of these pieces—whether it’s moonstone, pearl, or alexandrite—tells a story. Jewellery is never just an accessory. It’s an act of love, a marker of memory, and a reflection of who we are.
But more than that, jewellery can be a force for good. As a certified Fairmined artisan, I choose to work with materials that respect the earth and uplift the people who mine them. Ethical sourcing isn’t just a checkbox for me—it’s a foundation. It means every piece I make carries a story of empowerment and dignity from mine to market.
By choosing birthstone jewellery made with care, you become part of that story. You give a gift that not only honours someone you love but also supports responsible mining practices, environmental protection, and social justice.
