Preserving the Sentimental Value of Heirlooms

Transforming heirlooms allows you to preserve their emotional significance while giving them a fresh, contemporary twist. By remodelling an existing piece, you retain its essence without the cost of buying new gold. Especially important factor with today’s rising gold prices. The only expenses involved are the craftsmanship, along with any additional elements like engraving or gemstones.

Heirloom jewellery carries more than just material value—it holds stories, memories, and deep sentimental meaning. Whether it’s a vintage ring passed down for generations or a brooch that belonged to a beloved relative. These pieces connect us to our family history. However, styles and tastes evolve, and not all heirlooms suit modern wear or fit their new owner.

In this blog, I’ll share some remarkable customer commissions where cherished heirlooms were reimagined into stunning new jewellery. I’ll also walk you through the transformation process, from concept to completion. Ensuring that these precious pieces remain part of your story for years to come.

A Bold Cocktail Ring from Mixed Gold Pieces

This heirloom transformation was for a customer who brought me a collection of jewellery she had gathered over the years. Each piece was unique—some in white gold, others in yellow or rose gold. Some had been gifted to her as a child, while others were inherited, each carrying its own sentimental value.

Discussing her vision for a new piece, and she had a bold idea—a statement cocktail ring. Normally, I wouldn’t mix different gold colours, as I can’t guarantee the final hue. Each gold alloy has its own properties, and white gold, in particular, can be tricky to remodel. However, in this case, the design required no reworking or soldering, allowing me to cast it in sand in a single pour.

The result was a beautiful pastel yellow gold, likely because the original mix contained mostly yellow gold, a bit of white gold, and only a small amount of rose gold. The process began with carefully cleaning the jewellery and removing the diamonds. I then carved the ring shape in solid wax, creating an imprint in the sand for casting. Once cast, I trimmed away excess gold (which was returned to the customer), filed and smoothed the ring, then drilled holes for each diamond. Finally, the ring was polished to perfection, and the diamonds were reset, bringing her vision to life.

Turning the Past into a New Beginning

The second transformation was for a customer who wanted to turn the past into something new. She brought me jewellery that had been gifted to her, including a bracelet, an engagement ring, and a wedding band from a broken marriage. Ready for a fresh start, she decided to treat herself to a bold diamond ring—one that truly reflected her.

She had a clear vision for her new piece. I began by carefully cleaning the jewellery and removing the diamond from the engagement ring. The gold was then cast in sand, shaping it into a striking, chunky ring. To complete the transformation, I gave it a soft matte finish and set the diamond flush into the band using a gypsy setting. The result was a powerful statement piece—something she could wear with pride, carrying her story forward on her own terms.

My Usual Approach to Remodelling Heirlooms

It’s purely coincidental that the first two heirloom transformations I’ve shared were cast in sand—this isn’t my usual approach. More often, I start by carefully cleaning each piece in my ultrasonic cleaner before dismantling the jewellery. I then melt the gold down into sheet or wire to build the new piece from the ground up.

Most of the heirlooms I remodel are gold. Silver, while beautiful, doesn’t hold the same value, and the cost of remodelling often exceeds what the piece is worth. On occasion, I’ve also had the opportunity to work with platinum—a metal I truly love. It has a unique way of responding to the work, lending itself beautifully to intricate manipulation.

A Platinum Wedding Ring Reimagined

In the video, you’ll see the transformation of a single chunky wedding ring that belonged to the customer’s late husband, who sadly passed away due to illness. She wanted to honour his memory by creating two new pieces—one for herself and a heart pendant for his sister so they could both keep him close.

Platinum is a fascinating metal to work with, but it comes with its challenges. It melts at 1,768°C, requiring me to wear welding glasses to protect my eyes. It also tends to draw in dust and dirt from its surroundings, so I always ensure a perfectly clean workspace when melting it.

I began by melting the wedding ring into a solid platinum blob, the starting point for the reworking process. The new ring and pendant took shape from there, with the heart suspended on a black leather cord. Even the clasp was handmade using the remaining platinum—nothing went to waste. Every last bit of the original ring was used, making the transformation even more meaningful.

Gold Teeth Transformed into Jewellery Keepsakes

Heirloom transformations aren’t just made from jewellery of times gone by. Some customers have asked me to remodel and transform old gold teeth as well.

In this video, you’ll see three generations of gold teeth, dating from the late 1800s to the late 1900s. They belonged to a customer’s husband and his forefathers. She wanted to preserve their legacy in a unique way.

She had a pair of earrings made for herself. Her daughters each had a ring crafted from the gold. The opals, repurposed from a broken jewellery piece she provided, added a meaningful touch.

Gold teeth present challenges in the remodelling process. They are not always the same carat. I’ve seen some in 14ct, 18ct, and even 24ct. The 24ct is very unusual, as it is so soft. These teeth were also lined with platinum on the inside. I couldn’t separate the metals, so I traded them in at the refiners for new gold before crafting the jewellery.

Transforming heirlooms is a unique journey, blending sentimental history with contemporary craftsmanship. Whether it’s reshaping an old ring, creating something entirely new, or preserving a loved one’s memory in a wearable piece, the process ensures that these treasures continue to be cherished for generations to come.
