This brooch is unique and handmade especially for the exhibition of the biannual of Cultuurvuur hosted at the Botanical Gardens of Meise. During four months, starting May 1st and ending August 31st, thirty-six artists exhibit their work throughout the botanical gardens and the greenhouses. Approximately 60 000 visitors enjoy the gardens, art works, and green houses during this period.

Approximately 200 candidates entered this open call for the exhibition with as theme “The Chemistry of Light” in other words: photosynthesis. My design was one of the chosen along with 35 other artists.

This is my design concept. The peridots represent the stomata or leaf pores. The black tourmalines the CO2 and the aquamarines representing water. the brooch itself is the plant, with a little gold leaf as floral decoration.

The Peridot Brooch

Creating the brooch was a different matter. My design was a little on the large side, which makes it weigh more. I simplified the design and started the creating process.

The peridot wave ring is made in Fairmined silver. The wave ring is hand-carved as a wax model and then cast in Fairmined silver, at a certified Fairmined caster in the UK. The wax is carved specifically for these particular gemstones, as each stone is unique.

Can the ring be made to any specific ring size? Yes, but this means that the ring has to be recarved, and new gemstones need to be sourced. In this case, it also means that the price of the ring may vary.

There are three gemstones in this ring. An oval-shaped peridot is from Brazil, while the two plum garnets are from the State of Orissa in India. All three gemstones come from artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM).

Ring sizing

Handmade four-leaf clover brooch in Faimrined silver.

The Design Idea

At the beginning of 2025, I had the honour of creating a celebratory brooch for Viage Grand Casino — the start of a collaboration built on shared values: craftsmanship, trust, and a deep respect for meaningful creation.

At the beginning of 2026, that dialogue continued. Viage returned to me with a new commission linked to their “Clover Club” game, asking me to design and craft the first prize. What I value most in this collaboration is not only the creative freedom but the intention behind it. This is where the design for this brooch came from. It was a lovely idea to create a “good luck” charm as a brooch, although this version is slightly different from the Viage brooch.

Black Tourmaline

Tourmaline has one of the widest colour ranges of any gem species, occurring in various shades from blues, greens, to pinks, oranges and yellows, to two-tones and even black.

This Fairmined silver pink tourmaline ring was hand-carved as a wax model before being cast in silver. it in silver. The silver ring weighs approximately 13 grams. The design of the ring is entirely carved around the shape of the stone. The wax is carved specifically for this particular gemstone, as each stone is unique. Around the base of the stone are four Fairmined 18k yellow gold prongs holding the pink tourmaline.

What are tourmalines?

The tourmaline gemstone, alongside opal, is one of the birthstones for October.  It is naturally found in an array of different colours, ranging from yellows, and oranges to different shades of pink to blues, purples, and greens. Tourmaline occurs in many parts of the world, including Brazil and several African countries such as Tanzania, Nigeria, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Malawi and Namibia.

This is a Fairmined silver edge black diamond ring. Hand-carved in wax and cast in Fairmined silver. The solid silver ring, shaped with a wide band at the back that tapers into an edge at the top of the ring.  Comfortable to wear between the fingers.  High-polished finish with two small black diamonds flush-set into the side of the edge of the ring.

The original design dates from 2010. For Milano Jewelry Week 2022, the finishing of the ring is redesigned into the Fairmined silver edge black diamond ring. Instead, two small diamonds are flush set into the silver, to add contrast to the silver.

Carving Process

Firstly, the ring design is drawn onto a block of wax. Then, the shape is hand-carved out of the block. Once the knife-edge design is achieved, the wax model is cast into silver.

Pink sapphires

Most of us are familiar with the cornflower blue sapphires. But do you know that sapphire come in an array of colours and bi-colours? Pink sapphires also occur naturally. These pink sapphires are mine-to-market and originate from Madagascar.

What is Fairmined Silver?

Fairmined silver is very rare. This is because there are no fair or responsible silver mines in the world. So where does Fairmined silver come from? It is actually a bi-product from the Fairmined gold mines in Colombia. For every kilo of gold mined, there can be approximately 125 grams of silver, therefore Fairmined silver is very precious.
