What Are Akoya Pearls?

Akoya pearls shine with a rich lustre and smooth surface. They grow in saltwater oysters, originally from Japan, though now farmed in other regions. Their colours range from white, rose, and blue-green to creamy tones. I source my Akoya pearls from Marc’Harit, a company that supports responsible pearl farming.

What are Akoya Pearls?

As you may know, pearls come in a variety of shapes, colours and countries of origin. There are freshwater and saltwater pearls. So, how do you know which pearl comes from where? Find out more about the differences in pearls on the GIA website.

Akoya pearls come from saltwater oysters, originally cultivated in Japan, but more recently a similar variant comes from China. Their colours vary from white, white/rose, white/blue-green to cream-coloured.

My Akoya pearl supplier is Marc’Harit, a company based in Denmark.

Pink Sapphires

Most people know the classic cornflower blue sapphires, but did you know that sapphires come in a wide range of colours, including pink? You can find natural pink sapphires that add a soft, romantic touch to your jewellery. This sapphire comes from Malawi.

Fairmined vs. Fairmined Eco Gold

Fairmined is a non-profit organisation that supports small-scale artisanal mining communities. The two types of Fairmined gold are Fairmined and Fairmined Eco gold.

I source Fairmined Eco gold without using toxic chemicals like mercury or cyanide. This approach works because it comes from alluvial (open sky) mining. In contrast, regular Fairmined gold comes from underground mining, which may involve minimal cyanide use.

Both types of gold support the rehabilitation of local ecosystems. I track and trace the gold through the Fairmined Connect system, which ensures that I account for all purchased Fairmined gold, from mine to market. As a licensed jeweller, I must update this system twice a year to maintain my certification.
